As we enter the Asian century, Turning Japanese investigates how Japan became a cultural giant by tracing
the journey of Japanese loanwords (words adopted from another language) into English through the Oxford English Dictionary, New York Times API and
Google Search. Viewers interact with Japanese loanwords and multiple text visualizations and animations to understand the process whereby Japanese concepts are
translated into English, and become part of the Western conversation. This project constituted the final thesis
for the Master of Science in Data Visualization program at Parsons School of Design.
